Pre-Workout for Beginners: What to Know Before You Scoop
Thinking about trying pre-workout for the first time? You’re not alone. Whether you're chasing a killer pump or more energy, pre-workout supplements are super popular—but also slightly confusing if you're just starting out. Don’t worry, we’ve got you. Here’s everything beginners need to know before taking their first scoop.
💥 What Is Pre-Workout?
Pre-workout is a supplement (usually in powder form) designed to give you an energy boost, increase focus, and help you push harder during your workouts– basically your hype-man in powder form.
Most pre-workouts contain a mix of:
- Caffeine: This can range from 200-400mg depending on the brand
- Beta-alanine: Assists with your endurance & delaying muscle fatigue
- Nitric oxide boosters like L-citrulline for increased blood flow & that “pump” feeling
🕒 How Long Does Pre-Workout Take to Kick In?
Pre-workout typically kicks in 15 to 30 minutes after taking it. That’s why most people down it on the drive to the gym or during their warm-up. Timing is everything— Take it too late? You might still be buzzing at bedtime.
⏳ How Long Does The Effect Last?
Expect the effects to last 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on your body, the product, and how much caffeine is involved. Some high-stim pre-workouts may keep you wired longer, so avoid late-night lifts unless you enjoy doing push-ups in your room at 2 a.m.
🧪 How to Take Pre-Workout
1. Start Small – If you're new, start with half a scoop to see how your body reacts. Everyone handles caffeine and other ingredients differently. 🤷
2. Mix With Water – Typically 8–12 oz. Shake or stir well.
3. Consider Whether to Take on Empty-ish Stomach or Not – You’ll feel the effects faster if you're not full, so if that's what you want, you may want to go that route. We never recommend taking it on a totally empty stomach if you’re sensitive to caffeine. 💩
Now, if you're really sensitive to caffeine, it's probably best to have a meal or pre-gym snack on your stomach. You can play with the variable of food and see what you like best.
⚡ What Does Pre-Workout Feel Like?
Here are some things you could experience:
- Energy Boost – You’ll likely feel more awake and alert.
- Tingling Skin? That’s beta-alanine doing its thing. Totally normal—and sometimes fun.
- Increased Focus – Zoned in, ready to lift or run through a wall depending on who you ask.
- More Endurance & Strength – You might notice you can go longer or lift heavier.
🙅♂️ A Few Quick Warnings
Don't double scoop as a beginner. Seriously, more isn’t always better.
Watch your caffeine intake the rest of the day.
Stay hydrated. Some pre-workouts can dehydrate you faster, especially if you're sweating buckets.
Final Scoop
Pre-workout can be a total game-changer when used the right way. As a beginner, just ease into it, listen to your body, and enjoy the extra kick of motivation it gives you. Some people swear by it, others prefer a strong coffee and badass playlist—find what works for you.
